The Art of Preparation

It’s necessary to have a natural-born talent to play baseball in this world. However, one more important thing is whether or not you could try a little harder when facing your own limits. In reality, you can’t make a much greater effort than others, but I feel it’s very important to try a little bit harder over and over again. I’m proud of repeatedly doing that.

I always tell people there probably nobody on earth takes more swings than him. First day on spring training till the season is over, there is no days off. Every off day, we come to the ballpark, throw, hit, run. So, for me, coming to the field, ever since the first day of spring training, it’s a every day thing. He’ll take probably three days after the season, and come back the stadium for about a month. And we work out every day and do the same routine.

The reason I prepare is so that when I’m done for the day, I look back, and I don’t regret anything. I go out and make sure to preprare 100%, so I don’t think, “I wish I had done this or that.” That’s why I prepare every single day. So when I look back, I don’t regret the day. For now, I can only tell you what I couldn’t do yesterday.

So when I get to the batter’s box, if I had not prepared for the at-bat in here, I would have already lost. The approch to hitting begins behind the dugout. When you get to the plate, you can’t be thinking, you have to feel it.
